A Legacy on the Fox River Since 1836
Nestled along the scenic Fox River, Port Barrington Marina has been a part of the local waterfront community for nearly two centuries. The marina property has been owned and cared for by the Forbes family since 1836, making it one of the area’s longest-standing family-held riverfront sites.
For nearly 50 years, Jimmy Forbes proudly managed the marina, beginning in 1976. Under his leadership, the marina became a trusted home for boaters throughout the Fox River region. Known for his dedication to the boating community and his welcoming presence along the docks, Jimmy helped shape the marina into the landmark it is today. Following his passing in 2024, management of the marina has continued within the family, now led by his son James “JT” Forbes Jr.
Today, Port Barrington Marina continues to serve the Lower Fox River boating community, providing seasonal storage and services for area boaters. The facility accommodates up to 125 boats during the summer season and approximately 300 boats for winter storage, helping boat owners protect and maintain their vessels year-round.
While often associated with the greater Crystal Lake area, the marina is located in the Village of Port Barrington, formerly known as Fox River Valley Gardens. Its location along the Fox River makes it a convenient and welcoming destination for boaters from both McHenry County and Lake County.
With deep family roots, a rich local history, and a continued commitment to the boating community, Port Barrington Marina remains a well-known and trusted landmark on the Fox River. For generations, it has been a place where boaters gather, store their vessels, and enjoy life on the water
